The Sunbeams on The Gloomy Day in The Gloomy Land (16 x 20 inches)
This photo is one of the significant photographs in my life. I took it on the day that was the most turning point in my life. 31st May 2010, I was taken to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) office, Bangkok, Thailand, for interrogation after DSI officers had told me I was charged and arrested with the Lèse-majesté Law (Thai Criminal Code 112).
On that day, when the DSI officers took me to their office, the camera also was in my shorts pocket! As soon as I reached DSI's office, I was told to wait in an empty office hallway for a moment. While I was waiting there, I didn't know what to do next, so I looked outside at a large glass window. Seem like it was going to rain there. Above the horizon line, I saw beams of sunlight pass through gaps in the dark clouds to the land. I suddenly metaphorically thought about the darkness, censorship, falsity of propaganda in Thailand, fear, sunbeams, freedom of expression, and the truth.
Then, I quickly captured the scene with my camera. Suddenly, the head of DSI walked toward me and asked what I had just captured. "Just the elegant scene of clouds and sunbeams," I said. I didn't tell him what I was thinking about. Later, after I fled the country, I published the photo on public websites, including my metaphorical thinking.
"Even in the total darkness, the light beams can shine, penetrate through. The entire sky of truth is so vast. No matter how hard you try to obscure the truth with the filthy propaganda. Eventually, there must be somewhere that beams of sunlight can penetrate and shine down pass through the dark cloud to the land."
